I watched Donnie Darko for the first time last night. Ummmm I am a little freaked out and sort of confused. I need to discuss it. Anyone? Anyone?

One of my favorite movies. Love it, love it. You need to watch it again, and you'll appreciate more of the brilliance of it. Instead of the scary rabbit man part. :)
Missed you last night!

soooo good. it definitely requires multiple watchings to get the brain to stretch around it. brilliance. i was actually thinking about it just the other day...can't seem to remember how he ended up back in his bed smashed by the engine. hm.

It's totally on my best list. I think its one of those movies where you're not supposed to get everything. You've gotta love Jake though.

if only i were shooting bottles with a bb gun and debating the sex and gender of smurfs- grandma death philsophy of time travel - very good music in that film as well. good stuff, would like to argue about it.

Ok since lots have you have seen it...
did he sacrifice himself to save the world?
i was frustrated that the molester/anti-christ apparently got away. then on the website it says he killed himself, but they didn't find anything in his house.
so, nobody finds out about him? that's crap.
what did drew barrymore's character have to do with anything? why did they have her and her husband's character? didn't they accomplish the same thing?
these may be totally stupid questions. if so, i'm sorry.

No, they're good questions... which could be answered with a second or third viewing perhaps. :)
Who's JJ?

The ending is hermenuetically (look it up-good word) open. I don't like to look at him as the christ figure sacrificing to save the world. Rather, my subjective interpretation was that he found a Hawkings "worm-hole" which enabled time travel back to the begining of the film where the jet engine crashed into his bed, a sacrifice he made not for the world but for the girl. But even more interesting is the tension the film gives between the christ figure explanation and the scientific explanation. I thought the motivational speaker prick was caught and arrested for child porn. The resolution of his trial was not given in the film I just assume he would be sentenced as guilty. Drew Barrymore's character was one of the best in the film she represented artistic knowledge and virtue taken for granted. Cellar door. The science teacher represented the same but only specifically scientific knowledge. Perhaps I have read too deeply into it. But that's the way I like to do it. In fact now I'm gonna watch it again.
ps. JJ is anonymous that's why it says anonymous says... before the text. jk if you think about it i bet you can figure out who jj is?

Thank you "jj" for your in depth evaluation. i found the science v. spirituallity aspect of it very interesting. i was told that i needed to watch the extended version to really appreciate it. so, i am going to do that next. maybe i will get a little more insight that way. So, do you think he interupted what was supposed to happen? Or do you think he was correcting a mistake in the time line?

very good question! I don't know that even if I watched it again I could draw a conclusion. I think that may be the point though. "Sometimes things are black and white, things can't be defined in terms of fear and love because that doesn;t account for a much more complex array of human emotions" paraphrase. I think the film says exactly that there is no absolute concrete answer always and there are many plausible perspectives to consider especially in regardss to metaphysics - the way the "real" world is

good answer! that's what i keep getting from people. we don't know the answer that's what makes it so great. we each come to the question with our own perspectives so the answer is different for everyone. i love it.

i love it too thats why its fun to debate because there isn't a definite response beside the "there isn;t a definite response" response
